At the Paris Motor Show, Smart officially unveiled its new ultra-compact electric vehicle, the Smart #2. This model marks a return to the brand's roots, moving away from larger SUVs in favor of a miniature form factor reminiscent of the iconic Smart Fortwo. The car is designed specifically for city dwellers who need a nimble vehicle for navigating narrow streets and parking in the tightest spaces, effectively blending classic design with modern urban mobility requirements.

Technically, the Smart #2 features a rear-mounted 60kW electric motor delivering 130Nm of torque to the rear wheels. A notable design choice is the use of larger rear tires compared to the front, which is intended to enhance vehicle stability. Furthermore, the implementation of a five-link rear suspension system promises sportier handling and greater overall comfort, ensuring that the driving experience remains pleasant even during frequent stop-and-go traffic in dense urban environments.

The floor-mounted battery pack provides a range of up to 180 miles, or approximately 290 kilometers, which is a competitive metric for an ultra-compact EV. A significant advantage is the support for fast-charging, allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80 percent charge in just 20 minutes. This efficiency makes the vehicle a practical choice for users who prioritize convenience and need a reliable, quick-charging solution for their daily commutes.

Inside, the Smart #2 combines its compact footprint with modern digital features. The driver is provided with an 8.8-inch display, while the central console houses a 10.1-inch screen. The car supports wireless connectivity via 4G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, ensuring seamless integration with modern devices. Additionally, the manufacturer has included advanced driver assistance systems, which are essential for maintaining safety and awareness while navigating through complex city traffic and busy intersections.

The lineup includes several trims, ranging from the entry-level Pure to the premium Couture Edition. The Pure+ adds faster AC charging and heated seats, while the Premium trim offers a glass roof and a high-end Sennheiser sound system. The limited Couture Edition features unique white and gold styling, restricted to just 999 units. Buyers can choose from various two-tone color options, allowing for a high degree of personalization that reflects the original Fortwo's aesthetic.

The starting price for the Smart #2 is expected to be under $26,500. Preorders will open in the spring, with deliveries anticipated during the summer. Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, Smart has no current plans to bring the vehicle to the United States market, where small, budget-friendly EVs have struggled to gain traction. Consequently, the Smart #2 remains a tailored solution for international markets that value compact efficiency and smart urban design.
